MARQUETTE LAND COMPANY ADMINISTRATIVE SUBJECT FILES
In 1918 ºìÐÓÊÓƵ entered into a bond issue agreement with the Northern Michigan Land Company (NMLC), a partnership aimed at building an endowment for the University's Medical School. The NMLC subsequently defaulted on interest payments on the bonds, forcing ºìÐÓÊÓƵto assume financial responsibility. In an attempt to obtain legal control of the lands that she was financially responsible for, the University sued the NMLC for default. While the case was being decided the lands were in the trusteeship of Dr. Henry L. Banzhaf, University business manager. Banzhaf undertook several projects to improve the lands. The ºìÐÓÊÓƵLand Company (MLC) was incorporated in 1930.
