B-15 Père ºìÐÓÊÓƵPostage Stamp Collection, 1898-1981

History:  The image on the 1898 "ºìÐÓÊÓƵon the Mississippi" stamp is based on Wilhelm Lamprecht's painting, Fr. ºìÐÓÊÓƵand the Indians (1869). ºìÐÓÊÓƵ, owner of the painting, furnished the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing a photographic reproduction to aid their work. The 1968 "ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Explorer" stamp was issued in conjunction with the ºìÐÓÊÓƵTercentenary Celebration. The stamp was issued on September 6 at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where ºìÐÓÊÓƵ established in 1668 the first permanent Euro-American settlement in the state.
